Common Questions About Applying for a Spanish NIE

Exactly what is an NIE number?

While preparing to relocate to Spain, this is one of the first things you’ll want to know: what is the NIE number? If you are a foreign national living in Spain, you will need to apply for an NIE number from the Spanish Tax Office so that you can file and pay taxes there.

Why do I require an NIE?

Whenever you engage in any activity in Spain that triggers taxation for non-residents, you’ll be asked for your NIE number. Having an NIE number does not mean that you do not have a tax home. The following are some instances where an NIE is required:

✔️ Transactions involving the acquisition and disposition of real estate.
✔️ Letting out one’s home or other property to tenants.
✔️ Connecting utilities to your property.
✔️ Receiving a Spanish inheritance.
✔️ Establishing a new checking or savings account.
✔️ Buying a policy of insurance.
✔️ Buying or selling a car that was imported.
✔️ Buying or selling a sailboat from overseas.
✔️ Having a Job in Spain (short-term jobs under 3 months only)
✔️ Currently in Spain to pursue further education.
✔️ Making a benefit claim.
✔️ Getting a loan, whether it’s a mortgage or a credit card.
✔️ Allows one to register for a municipal census.
✔️ When enrolling new (foreign) students, some prestigious private schools abroad ask for their NIE numbers.

To what end is an NIE number required?

Any non-Spanish citizen who establishes a tax residence in Spain.
Someone who is not a Spanish resident but wants to buy property there or bring a car or boat there.
Any non-Spaniard who has professional, academic, or entrepreneurial interests in the country.

A NIE number looks like what?

The National Police Department will print your name, last name, date of birth, and nationality together with your NIE number on a normal A4-sized sheet of paper. For instance, X-12345678-Y.

Get your NIE number by following these steps:

Submit an application in person at the Spanish consulate where you now reside.
To apply in Spain, visit an Oficina de Extranjera or a Spanish National Police station.
Represent yourself when applying. With an NIE-specific Power of Attorney, you can provide legal representation the authority to act on your behalf.

How can I qualify for an NIE?

✔️ Passport.
✔️ Fill out the appropriate application in Spanish.
✔️ Finance the administrative cost.
✔️ Explanation for why you require it, such as in a private sales deal
